Saldanha Bay Introduces App in Electronic Services Player

To improve its citizens’ access to municipal services, the Municipality of Saldanha Bay (SBM) in the Western Cape has rolled out a digital citizen app.

Developed by local tech company AmoebaTSC, the app is aligned to work “effortlessly” with e-municipal systems, a statement said.

It is an engagement platform between citizens, municipality and service providers, including communication, emergency button, help desk, utility management, utility purchasing services, digital wallet and payments, document repository, events and facility management functionality.

“Technology is not the solution in itself, but rather an enabler and an enabler to be used in innovative ways to achieve socio-economic development in and for our communities,” said Heinrich Metler, City Manager of SBM.

The application, the statement notes, is one of the key elements of the municipality, the first of which is the installation of a single open access network.

Cornell De Kock, Director of Economic Development and Strategic Services at SBM, adds: “This open access network provides a digital highway to our municipality that opens up access to a multitude of internet service providers and provides the means to access to allow the rest of the building blocks.”

In addition, it is part of the BAOBAB project, which aims to connect every household in the municipal area.

According to the statement, the BAOBAB project is part of the overall framework of the open access infrastructure of the municipality of Saldanha Bay, focusing on solving the provision of fiber to the X for all in the community. .

“It creates an open, fair and transparent platform for the private sector and the municipality to deliver value-added services over the network and fiber platforms,” says Chris van der Walt of AmoebaTSC.

As interest in smart cities continues to grow, national and local governments are engaging in sustainability, innovation and economic development programs that depend on technology investments.

“An efficient telecommunications network and related services is one of the key enablers of such a smart municipality vision,” concludes Van der Walt.
